Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) has decided to suspend its streaming service in Russia due to the country’s war with Ukraine. The move comes nearly a week after the entertainment giant refused to broadcast on state TV channels and adhered to a propaganda mandate on big streamers.

As reported by The Verge, Netflix cited war as the reason behind the decision, with spokeswoman Emily Feingold saying in a statement: “Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our services in Russia.”

Netflix has suspended the streaming service after rejecting Russia’s mandate to broadcast state TV channels such as Channel One and NTV last week. The government has ordered the screening of 20 state-backed channels showing war propaganda.

The company has about 1 million customers in Russia, and has also announced it will suspend any production and acquisitions in the countries where it worked on the original four products.

Netflix joins a list of other major film industry giants such as Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) Paramount Pictures, and Warner Brothers, which have all delayed new releases.

The streaming giant suspended all four of its original projects in Russia “including the crime thriller series directed by Dasha Zhuk, which was shot and has been postponed,” reports Variety.

As of Monday, no one in Russia will be able to sign up for Netflix. On the other hand, customers who already have an active subscription will be able to continue using their account until the end of the current billing cycle.

Netflix also warns that it will not offer Russian country channels on its platform, despite the fact that this is a requirement of the territory’s laws. The company has taken gradual steps since the invasion of Russian troops on Ukrainian territory.

Netflix is part of the Entrepreneurs Index, which tracks the 60 largest publicly traded companies managed by their founders or their founding families.
