Your Divorce Lawyer Knows Best

Contemplating divorce, or experiencing divorce, is one of life’s most stressful events. Unfortunately, more than half of married couples will experience it. Because of the high divorce rate, almost everyone who has experienced a divorce knows someone who has been divorced or is in the process of divorce. There are often hurt feelings, custody battles, and property divisions to be resolved.

If you’re in this situation, you may be tempted to ask friends, relatives, coworkers, and others for advice and information who’s been in a similar predicament—but don’t. Seek comfort and support from this group, and seek legal advice from your attorney. A good divorce attorney will be able to answer any questions you have and point you in the direction that is best for you and your children.

Divorce cases are complicated. Clients often feel anxious because they do not have answers to many of their questions. While your case and a friend’s divorce may seem similar, they are very likely different. There are so many variables that go into each case including custody, money, pre-nuptial agreements, alimony, and many other factors.

Family law cases are driven by facts. Differences in facts from one case to another will lead to different strategies and legal results. That’s why the best person to turn to for legal advice is your attorney. You should worry about setting yourself and your children with the best advice and outcomes. A lawyer can point you in the right direction, while a friend may unwittingly mislead you.

What if you don’t have a lawyer yet? I highly recommend hiring a lawyer who specializes in family law. Your own social network may be able to provide you with the names of lawyers. In addition, there are organizations that will help you find the right resources, lawyers, and other divorce professionals. Your local Bar Association can be another great resource.

One of my favorite organizations for women in the Chicagoland area that helps find divorce attorneys and offers support groups is The Lilac Tree: Resources for Divorcing Women in Evanston, IL. The Lilac Tree is a non-profit organization that provides many resources for women who are thinking about divorce, are in divorce proceedings, or are already divorced. I encourage women looking for information to check their website. For men, look for a local divorce meeting group in your area.
